Royal Liver 2011!

We recently ran the Royal Liver AGM at St George's Hall in Liverpool! It was a week long event including rigging and looked amazing inside the Hall. As you can see from the pictures, it has some great statues and intricate architecture.

Comtec Moving to New Pastures!

We have managed to secure a new building to run Comtec from. This building is bigger, better and newer than our current building and much more geared up for our type of work.

We are all really excited here about the move which will be commencing later this year and with an 'open plan' layout it will allow even closer interaction between departments.

Hopefully we can get some pictures of our new home on here soon!

Phoenix TV

Comtec, Manchester Phoenix and Manchester Metropoliton University have joined forces to create Phoenix TV. Currently still in development stages a few episodes have been made and hopefully it can become a regular quality feature for all Manchester Phoenix Ice Hockey fans!

With the help of Comtec, Manchester Metropoliton University (MMU) students are able to get involved and learn through this exciting new project. MMU have a fantastic studio with some great kit to use and it provides an ideal local platform in which to shoot Phoenix TV. The programme is created entirley by volunteers some of which includes some familiar faces at Manchester Phoenix Match nights and the improvements made since week 1 (4 weeks ago) has been major with some really positive feedback from supporters.

The show looks set to go from strength to strength as the weeks go on and is a good advert as we show that we are not scared to try new things or let others get involved and get creative with us.

Stepping into Comtec

As a new member of the team it is great to be able to get really involved in live events right from the start! My second week in fact started with the launch of a multi-million pound Nuclear Submarine, so straight in at the deep end I'd say!

Over the last few months I have met a host of new challenges to get stuck into including; rigging big empty rooms to full blown sets with media coverage, producing TV material and most recently, live editing during a ceremony which felt like a stage performance in itself!

Working into the role as Media Producer so far has been enjoyable and rich in opportunities, an aspect which isn't usually so prevalent in other companies. I look forward to achieveing much more in the future and working with some more diverse and interesting clients!

Trades Union Congress (TUC) - September 2010

Comtec Presentations were once again awarded the opportunity of producing the annual Trades Union Congress. For 12 years in succession, Comtec have delivered the conference with continued commitment to both maintaining excellence and developing improvement.

The key to this successful relationship is the knowledge and understanding that has been developed and built upon year on year. This is fully exploited to ensure that each year the event is improved from the physical look of the conference through to the technology used and the logistics employed to ensure a streamlined event from start to finish.

Working within many of the large venues throughout the UK the challenge is to guarantee that the look and feel of the conference is in keeping with the TUC brand as well as ensuring that all media coverage is catered for. From the press through to TV and radio, the Comtec team have to make certain that everyone is happy as well as the client.

Security is another area of understanding - from dealing with demonstrations within the audience to working alongside special branch for the attendance of the Prime Minister. We were also responsible for the management of the early closure of the conference that occurred during the event in September 2001.

In addition to the above, Comtec also provide all of the usual everyday requirements for a conference of this size and calibre - from media presentations to sound, lights, projection and camera crews.

The Manchester Phoenix is back!

Comtec Presentations are once again proud to support the Manchester Phoenix ice hockey club for yet another year. Comtec has always believed that the Manchester Phoenix is one of the North West’s best-kept secrets and a fantastic night out that all the family can enjoy. From the sport itself (surely the most exciting around) to the incredible atmosphere inside the Altrincham Ice Dome, the whole match night experience is second to none!

Associating ourselves with the Phoenix was an easy choice for a variety of reasons. Their junior system encompasses all ages and has rapidly become one of the best in the country. Providing a means for local children to learn and play the sport in an organised and competitive environment. The progression is direct, all the way from the youngest at U10s level to the adult Trafford Metros in the English National League, acting as feeder team to the Phoenix. One day these kids could progress to the senior side as a full-time Phoenix player - following in the footsteps of their heroes or maybe even playing alongside them! Getting kids into sport is a great thing, and something Comtec have always been fully sportive of.

There is also the Manchester Phoenix Community Sports Foundation, where members of the team and backroom staff take the sport out to various communities in Manchester and allow them to experience it first-hand when they may not have had the chance previously. Using an inflatable rink and street hockey gear, they put on hockey exhibitions that the children are able to take part in. The best of these children are encouraged to join a local roller hockey team along with learning the basics of ice hockey with the Phoenix junior teams - with the aim that they can be integrated into the regular junior teams and progress through the academy system. The Foundation also has a Road Show that visits schools to teach the pupils about drugs, healthy eating and an active lifestyle whilst introducing them to the Phoenix experience. It’s a fantastic scheme that will have huge benefits for the local community.

It's getting a bit 'chilli' in the Media department...

Media's Director Helen Ridgeway has been carefully and meticulously growing chilli's for several months now - and finally it's chilli harvest!!

Unsure on the true strength of the chilli's it was decided that Helen Ford should 'bite the end off one' just to check.

Not satisfied with the measly nibble Helen took, she was forced to take a proper bite (including the seeds). It was decided at that point that the chilli's were in fact quite hot and should probably be used sparingly in any cooking.

UK Greetings Annual Conference & Awards 2010

This year the crew traveled to the Fairmont Hotel for four days to setup and produce UK Greetings annual conference and awards. The accommodation was fantastic – a large country manor house with views of the ocean from every window – and we were paid to be there! It’s wonderful when an event is in a great location.

My role this time was auto prompt! For those of you who do not know what this is, it’s providing scripts together with a number of helpful features, to be displayed for a host to read from at their own pace on stage. It’s designed to make the life of the presenter as stress free as possible and it keeps you on your toes!

The schedule was two days of rehearsals followed by the big event. The set and theme was X Factor and it looked amazing! We went all out! We even had the central doors which opened and closed to let the host on stage with the authentic smoke! The atmosphere was electric. It was all hands on deck for the entire crew to ensure the event went smoothly- and it did! Great feedback from all!

Comtec undertook the greatest team-building exercise of them all – a UKG shower-robe photo shoot! We thought, as we all had special white, fluffy hotel robes with matching slippers that we would have a group picture in the grounds to show off to the crew back at the office!

One World Media Trust Awards 2010

This is the 10th year that Comtec Presentations have worked with this client. Comtec produced a slick awards ceremony, on time and on budget. This year we worked in a new state of the art venue with Hi Definition nominee footage and live action cameras projected on a large screen for the audience present in the room. However the needs of the BBC were very much incorporated into the staging design and lighting, as the event was to be broadcast the following weekend to an international audience of millions. Comtec worked with their director and cameramen to ensure the best results for all the crews different needs and ensured the smooth running of the event.

The One World Trust recognises and awards the best coverage of the developing world, across all media - so the event had to be high quality for people who know and work within the broadcasting industry. The thirteen winners were recognised in the awards hosted by Jon Snow, who hotfoots it straight from the Channel 4 newsroom onto stage, so no time for presenter rehearsals, it just has to be right.

Rig Day

Early start…

Snap happy!-that’s how I would summarize the day for myself. I spent quite a lot of time acting as the paparazzi on our rig day - much to the crews’ aversion.

My first mission of the day was to ensure that our shrine (the urn) was ready and waiting for the crew to appreciate. Done and dusted and off to find breakfast! Pointed in a general direction, I went to investigate the potential of cafes in Cardiff city centre. I was pleased with my findings. Not far from City Hall my nose smelt the aroma of fresh bread baking followed by sausages and bacon! Just what the doctor ordered.

All boxed up I returned to the hungry crew who were very appreciative though I couldn’t stop thinking about how to the café proprietor I must have looked like the greediest person in the world!

Up next, table assemblage with Michele. My expertise comes in the form of organization - that’s why I’m a Project Manager. I did however gaffe cables, attach speakers to stands and assist raising the set. The set raising was the most exciting.

Back on to my main mission for the day – photography. I had to use guerilla tactics to ensure pictures were taken of everyone in action. I received some grumbles but it just gave my role a more realistic feel.

Lunch approached but this time Helen (Fordy) Ford was there to take on the mission alongside myself of pleasing all with lunch- a rather difficult task I might add.

By close of day, most of the technical crew had departed leaving the rest of us to prep the room for rehearsals tomorrow! 8 down to 5!

We made it! Till tomorrow…

The rest of the week was work, work, work!

As you can see I became a connoisseur at brew making. My main role however was to scan the delegates badges to register them for the morning and afternoon sessions.

The delegates were all lovely which made my job great! Overall, I spent my time checking everyone was happy - both the delegates and crew.

I really enjoy getting the opportunity to go out on events because the first hand experience on a live event allows you to get a true appreciation of what we do in all departments to get the final product as a team. It is really exciting to see everything come together.

Federation of Infection Societies - Conference & Exhibition 2009

Comtec helped the Federation of Infection Societies (FIS) bring together one of the countries largest gatherings of infection control specialists and experts at the Birmingham ICC in November.

With swine flu being the hot topic on everyone’s lips since the World Health Organisation declared a pandemic of the H1N1 strain on June 11th, Infection2009, which was held 11th-13th November, was a pivotal event on the infection control calendar attracting attendees from around the world.

There were a number of high profile speakers talking at the event including Professor Neil Ferguson who presented his mathematical modelling and analysis of the H1N1 virus. Professor Ferguson, advised the UK, US and Chinese governments and the World Health Organisation on the management of the swine flu pandemic.

This is the first year Comtec have worked with FIS on their event. The Federation’s conference is traditionally the largest gathering of microbiologists in the UK and this year the event brought in over 800 visitors and 75 exhibitors, smashing all previous records.

With FIS, Comtec created the Infection 2009 brand and formed collaborations with some of the countries top organisations such as the Royal College of Nursing, British Geriatrics Society and the Department of Health.

Account Manager Rachel Bullock stated; ‘When the H1N1 strain was confirmed as being pandemic in June we realised that now, more than ever, the need to bring together some of the worlds experts in pandemics and other areas of infection control was vital.’ The event, which spanned three days, was one of the largest in the Comtec Calendar for 2009.

During the event the crew were responsible for a variety of services including filming and co-ordinating speaker sessions, managing the exhibition and producing a Gala Dinner for attendees.

The project was self-generating, which encompassed every area of Comtec’s expertise and involved most Comtec staff members. Pre-event, Comtec were entrusted with sourcing exhibitors and sponsorship for the conference & exhibition. By building a database of companies specialising in infection control that operate in the UK, Comtec’s sales team were able to accurately target the correct individuals to ensure a maximum conversion rate.

Delegate sales were also driven by Comtec. Primarily targeting contacts from the collaborating organisation’s, followed by those sourced externally, Comtec created a series of html campaigns, partnered with a Direct Mail shot and follow up calls which brought in record numbers of attendees.

With a large number of delegates and attendees coming from overseas Comtec used their expertise in delegate management to ensure it was easy for delegates to book a place at the conference including negotiating special room rates with local accommodation via the Birmingham Convention Bureau.

Print work requirements for the event ranged from promotional marketing materials through to exhibitor manuals, delegate handbooks and menus. All of these are designed and produced by the in house media department, who having created the initial theme and branding for the event carry this through all elements of the project.

Comtec created an event website which included online delegate booking, abstract submission and delegate session selector. Comtec also modernised the marketing of the event using online techniques such as email campaigns, twitter, RSS feeds and video to maximize the attraction of the event.

Post event, Comtec ensure they collect feedback covering all aspects of the event from all attendees, either exhibitors, speakers or delegates to ensure the event grows and develops year on year, in stature, attendance from both exhibitors and delegates, sponsorship, income and profit.

Christmas...

Christmas comes but once a year...

...so let’s drag it out for as long as we possibly can!

Or so seems most retailers’ strategy when it comes to the festive season.

Christmas started at the end of October in shops around the area and will probably end around mid-January. I am not some Scrooge like character that dislikes Christmas, I love it though I do feel it is losing a bit of its charm as I get older. To add a bit of sparkle to this years Christmas I am jetting out to New York to see in the New Year in style! Fab!!!

Anyway, now I have bragged about my up-coming holiday...

We are definitely not using the run up to Christmas as an excuse to sit back and relax and are more than merry getting into the festive spirit whilst out on shows... in fact we have 6 shows about to fly out of the doors!

Everyone is a little bit on edge as traditionally, Secret Santa is drawn in the first week of December. With the day fast approaching everyone is a little anxious as to who they will pull out of the bag. Who will have to buy a present for the MD?! Who will receive the funniest present?! Who will receive the best?!

The excitement is reaching boiling point!!!

We have created our new all singing, all dancing (not literally might I add) email-able Christmas card which will be hitting inboxes of our nearest and dearest in December. Apologies about the lack of posts
Last week was definitely one of the busiest of the year with one of our bigger events going out (they seem to get bigger as the year goes on!).

Infection 2009, the flagship conference of the Federation of Infection Societies saw half of Comtec de-camp to Birmingham for 4 days.

Everyone agreed it was a lot of hard work from everyone on the crew but overall, everyone had a great time.

Over 700 visitors came over the 3 days of the event to see speakers at the conference and the 75 stand exhibition.

This week everyone is catching up after being out of the office and getting on with the next jobs at hand... it never seems to stop but we wouldn’t have it any other way!

We also saw Rachel Bullock, Account Manager, move onto pastures new upon her return this week. Good Luck Rach, we know you will do well.

A week in the life of... Becs

Monday – well it was an excellent start to the week when we had a slight glitch in the electrics which meant we were computer-less. With our resident IT expert off the premises, the care of the servers etc fell into my lap. Luckily everything ran smoothly and we avoided any issues. Phew!

I spent the rest of the day writing up case studies and copy for future campaigns and press releases.

Tuesday – After a few weeks of saying ‘I really should document how to do this’ for others in the company (and for clients too) I finally got around to writing How To Guides for blogging creating marketing campaigns. I also made a few updates for clients the Manchester Phoenix and Infection 2009.
I left on the stroke of 5.30 (very unlike me) today as I had to get to Manchester to see a band called Phoenix play. They were brilliant, one of the best live bands I have seen in a while (and I have seen quite a few recently). They were supported by a band called Chairlift who I also thoroughly recommend.

Wednesday – Every Wednesday I take content provided by the Manchester Phoenix and put it into a lovely html email template and this Weds was no different.
I was also tasked with setting up Michelle who has joined us to cover Danni whilst she goes on maternity leave with emails and a computer. After my time moonlighting as an IT expert again I returned to my real life as a marketer making email-able invites, again for our friends at the Manchester Phoenix.

Thursday – Holidaaaaay! It was about time but I had a well deserved, if I do say so myself, day off. I had a lovely time catching up with my friend, watching Total Recall and eating Chinese food (If you are ever in the Manchester area and looking for moderately priced, excellent quality Chinese I suggest you head to Sweet Mandarin in the Northern Quarter. Very good stuff!)

Friday – back to work and in an extremely quiet office. Just as I settled in with the heating on high and my favourite radio station in the background thinking I was alone for the day, two noisy project managers turned up to join me! :)
The entirety of Friday was spent catching up on bits and bobs of jobs and completing tasks I had started previously. Was very productive and I feel much more organised.

Its Danni’s leaving day today and I really wish her Good Luck. Her presence in our "late lunch club" will be missed but I am sure she will be back in the New Year to show us the little ‘un.

And that was my week!

It wasn’t a typical week, but then they never are, but I hope this gave you a slight insight into my working life.

The Tea Girl
So I have been here for 8 weeks and I have been asked to write a blog. Not really sure what to write so I thought I would let you know a bit more about me and what I think of Comtec so far :)

I am a 5ft.5 (yes and a half) 24 year old brunette. I love films and I like to give a hundred per cent to everything I do so unfortunately I am not great at taking criticism-but I am human so it is expected that I have faults. Another fault is my love of food-I may be fussy but the food I do love I like a lot of lol. My weakness in particular is cheese, curry and wine.

I live at home with my mum which is good as I get looked after very well but there is a lack of privacy. I am hoping to move out next September which should be a great adventure I was going to move out this year but I thought that a new job was enough adventure for me.

In my spare time I love to go to the cinema so I tend to go at least once a week-though I won’t watch any horror-it just scares me so I spend most of my time hiding from the screen (rather pointless). Unfortunately I am a bit of a romantic so I do like a good rom com-not going to lie-I am quite girly. However I love action films especially the classics like anything with Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme or the beautiful Bruce Willis.

So eight weeks. It has gone really quick, though at the same time I feel like I have been here for quite a while. A contradiction but that’s how I feel. I think it’s because of a mix of reasons-how welcoming everyone has been and how much there has been for me to learn.

I have no complaints yet except for the lack of tea making from Sevans and George :) So far I am very happy here and look forward to writing my next blog....if I’m allowed.

There are 25 people currently based in Communications House.

Of the 25...

2 have the surname Gilmour.
2 have the surname Lyons.
2 are named Rebecca.
2 are named Helen.
2 are named Steve.
2 are named Anne.
2 are named Sarah.

So that means that there are 11 people with truly unique names, both first and surname, based in our building. However, we are soon to get a Michelle to cover for Danni when she goes to have her baby which means that Michele Marsh will no longer be the only Michelle.

At least the new Michelle won’t have many names to remember....

How do you manage to switch off from work?

How do you manage to switch off from work?

...I do it with jogging, not for everyone I know and that includes most of the people I work with!

In January 2008 I decided that I wanted to do something to raise money for a charity that was important to me. With a busy schedule at the best of times it took quite a bit of deliberating to decide that maybe I could start jogging. Never someone to do thinks by halves I bought a pair of decent trainers and set about training to do a half marathon in September! I know most people who have only just taken up jogging might have settled with a 10k race to start with but I always have to push myself. I also have to make sure that I tell as many people as possible so that there is no way that I can back out. So the challenge was set.

May 2008 was half way through my training schedule and saw me taking part in the Manchester 10k – a bit of test of my ability. Race went well and I finished in a respectable time. So far so good! The lead up to September was challenging as I increased my distances in preparation for the 13.2 miles of the Leeds Half Marathon. The race itself was quite daunting and very hilly! I feel I fully appreciated just how hilly when I got to the top of one particular hill and a very nice chap told me that I had done well to survive 'cardiac hill'!!! It was really hard going from 10 miles onwards when I ran out of energy but sheer stubbornness got me through the last 3 miles, still jogging otherwise it was going to take me even longer to get to the finish line! Becs and Sarah from the office were waiting to cheer me over the finish line and it was fantastic to see friendly faces – even if they did want pictures when I looked so sweaty and hideous!! The sense of achievement was amazing and I raised over a £1,000 for St. Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds.

But the jogging had become a bit of a bug and although not so strictly I continued with jogging though the winter when I could get out. So January 2009 sees me deciding that I need another personal challenge and obviously it needs to be better than 2008.

So completing the Great North Run (13.2 miles on the 20th September) and The Great South Run (10 miles on the 25th October – 2 days before my 40th birthday so no early celebrating!!!) was the plan of action.

The Great North Run was an all round amazing experience! From setting off to Newcastle at 6.30am in the morning to seeing Gordon Ramsay arrive also looking excited about taking part to slapping hands with Sting as I went over the start line to jogging with a ‘push me pull you’. The crowds lined every part of the 13.2 miles and their support is what made it such an unbelievable experience. For those that didn’t see the coverage on BBC1 it was a scorching hot day and I did suffer with the heat at miles 5 & 6 but then I managed to cool myself down and get into a steady pace for the rest of the race. I finished it on an absolute high and am now hooked on the Great North Run Experience and will definitely be doing it again next year!

So its now just less than 3 weeks to the Great South Run, training is harder because it’s getting darker earlier and motivating myself to run in the dark isn’t easy!!! But i’m really excited as it’s home territory and a flat course. So on the 25th October when you’re enjoying a leisurely Sunday morning spare a thought for me embarking on my next race!

North of England Excellence Business Awards

North of England Excellence Business Awards
When I first started at Comtec, I was a Project Manager and the North of England Excellence Business Awards was my first event. The event was held in the Hilton Hotel in Manchester and it was a very exciting few hours for me – but it was also extremely tiring! I vividly remember, at 3am perching on the edge of the stage during the de-rig, coiling cables and wishing I was at home, in bed!

Fast forward two years and I was in a very different position. I was sat on the other side of the set, dining in style (foie gras to start, garlic and herb chicken with some sort of wonderful potato side dish for the main course and finally a raspberry mousse type thing for dessert).

The set looked incredible. It was lit in the NOEE brand colours, lots of purples and pinks with two 42-inch plasma lecterns at the front. Star cloth behind the set twinkled as the awards were handed out and it was such a different feeling to two years ago. I had time to take it all in and be proud of what the Comtec staff had achieved. From the first moment we are handed a contract, the teams work hard to design and build the perfect set, put together a slick presentation, and of course, to deliver to the clients expectations.

The Leeds Armouries was the back drop for the North of England Business Excellence Awards and what an incredible venue that is! The evening began with a drinks reception and we were treated to a demonstration by some of the staff dressed in replica armour from centuries ago and armed with some pretty heavy-looking swords! The demonstration was a lovely touch and was a very original way of kicking an event off. The host for the evening was BBC North West’s Dave Guest and swept through the presentation with his usual wit and charm!

Unfortunately for me, the night ended in a very similar way to the way it did two years ago. Perched on the edge of my seat at the table (which was sporting a lovely red wine stain thanks to not-so-steady hand), I nursed a glass of water and looked forward to going home to bed. Sadly, it was only 10:30pm – I think I’m getting old!

BBC Double Whammy!
Here at Comtec we featured on BBC News with two high profile speakers at two separate events on one night; Tony Blair at the Ethnic Oscars and Gordon Brown at the TUC.

Gordon Brown addressed the TUC delegation in Liverpool’s BT Convention Centre on 15th September about the state of the economy. This year’s TUC was held in Liverpool for the first time in over 100 years and this was the 12th consecutive year that Comtec Presentations had held the account.

This year’s AFL-CIO, the American equivalent to TUC, is running concurrently meaning that the President from the AFL-CIO and General Secretary from TUC have been able to address each other’s delegations across the Atlantic.

At the same time, Comtec were also in London at the GG2 Leadership & Diversity Awards at which Tony Blair spoke about faith and beliefs to the audience who attended the glitzy awards ceremony. The awards were held at Grosvenor House Hotel in the heart of London’s Mayfair.

The awards celebrated the success of diversity and leadership in the UK amongst ethnic minorities. This premier ethnic awards ceremony includes awards ranging from GG2 Man of the year to the Hammer Award recognising individuals that reach a rare position of influence and authority.

The Plague...

Comtec hit by the Plague...
It’s been another busy week. The entire team have been run off their feet and travelled from Manchester to Leeds to Manchester to London.

We also have a cold spreading around the company with Media having started it and spread it to Technical and Ops. So far in Sales & Marketing we are immune... So far.

As if that isn’t enough we have had to quarantine one member of staff who has developed Chicken Pox aged 35!

We aren’t all disease ridden though. Some of us are as fit as a fiddle ... Cough.

What a week?!
We had more than our 15 minutes of fame on Tuesday 15th September.

If you were watching BBC news that evening you would have spotted us in reports from this year’s TUC conference as well as at GG2 Leadership & Diversity awards.

Gordon Brown addressed the TUC delegation in Liverpool’s BT Convention Centre about the state of the economy.

At the same time, we were also in London at the GG2 Leadership & Diversity Awards at which Tony Blair spoke.

The crew are all exhausted and ready for the weekend now.

Unfortunately we lose a few members of the team today – Kay is leaving to have baby number 2 and Nick and Laura are returning to university after their placement year with us.

We wish all three the best of luck and of course we will miss them!!!

The evolution of language...
Bonjoúr!

In the Sales & Marketing department it has become VERY popular to speak a mix of English and French or, Frenglish as I am dubbing it.

Sales & Marketing Director George Thompson was the trend setter as he bizarrely started dropping words and phrases such as "oui" and "tres bien" into conversation in a terrible French accent. This was quickly built upon by Amanda, Rachel, Trish & myself with questions such as "Où est la toner nouveau for the printer?"

As you can tell, our French skills are a little lacking however in my defence I have never had a French lesson in my life! Infact, I have even begun adding the odd bit of Spanglish including "no me gusta la smell in la toilette". That was a bad example but it perfectly illustrated our grasp of the foreign tongue.

Amanda has the highest level of French fluency (we once heard her on the phone to people at Disneyland Paris and were amazed to say the least) but seems to be contributing the least to the conversations. This is probably a wise move on her behalf.

Danni's Week
Since starting with Comtec I have had many random tasks thrown at me with last week being no exception to this. I’ve been getting quotes for a variety of wacky/wonderful things…porter cabins, mask artwork, trophies. I’ve also had my Bob the Builder hat on, recently discovering what a grommet and a back plug is. By now I believe I have more than earned "Jim’ll Fix It" status.

In other news…I would like to make a lot of people very jealous - for the first time pretty much EVER, me and my partner Anthony have actually won something!! Well, it was more Anthony than me. And no, it’s not a free bag of crisps or £1 on the lottery!! We’ve managed to bag 2 tickets to a world cup game including flights and 3 nights in a 4* hotel!! South Africa, here we come!! I’m not really a football fan but I think I can manage pretending to be considering the circumstances!!

'Jiggy… but a bit too rhymey'
So, Robbie Williams has brought a new song out. And this is apparently big news! Apart from being all over local and national radio, it has made national newspapers and is even featured on the BBC News website homepage – must be a slow day today?!

The single, which has been much awaited by, oooh about 5 people, starts off very well. It has a very funky beat courtesy of the seminal producer Trevor Horn. Soon it becomes very “Robbie” which is no bad thing – but in my opinion, the two don’t really mix.

The rest of the office have provided very mixed reviews – Project Management said "yeah… it’s alright" and "it’s quite jiggy but a bit too rhymey", George said "I’m really liking it" and me, well, it could be a grower. Amanda though, our Account Director was vehement about the song. She has promised to make us all listen to it until we love it as much as she does. She’s already planning on buying tickets for any forthcoming Robbie tour and has considered emailing the man himself to suggest that he doesn’t rejoin Take That until he’s re-established himself as a solo artist.

I will be very intrigued to see what comes out next. I can’t see any of his material being as big a hit as some of Take That’s more recent records but then Robbie has surprised before. Remember when he left Take That and everyone thought he’d fail? Then came Angels! Maybe he could pull off a similar triumph with this album? Only time will tell… I’ll keep you posted!

Never mind the b....
If you are anything like me you have come back from your Bank Holiday to an inbox full of unsolicited sales emails containing cringe worthy(!) clichés.

Rather than beating them, I decided to join them and have come up with my own for Comtec.

Comtec get sTUCk in!
Comtec are delighted to announce that for the 12th consecutive year we have been awarded the contract to produce the annual TUC conference, this year to be held in Liverpool in September.

To our knowledge, this decision makes Comtec the only event production company to have ever held the two most high profile union conferences in the UK; TUC and the National Union of Teachers in the same year.

Retaining the TUC perfectly demonstrates our commitment to surpassing our client’s expectations year after year.

Business Link Yorkshire
It has been six months since winning a place on the Business Link North West roster and we celebrated by adding Business Link Yorkshire to our client list. Business Link is a government initiative that strives to help businesses with advice and events held to assist small to medium businesses grow. Appointment to the roster is a boost for the company and reaffirms our successes in 2009.

Preparations for a busy Autumn

Already delegate sales have almost reached 200 and more than three quarters of the stands have been reserved or sold making it the biggest exhibition the Federation of Infection Societies have held...

Jollies...

Jollies...
When the summer arrives there is usually a lull in the number of awards and conferences held due to it being a traditional time of holiday madness... and that is exactly why the past few weeks at Comtec have been filled with staff heading on their jollies.

Last year I had a 3 month jaunt around Europe & Russia for my summer. This year... a weekend in the Lake District. It’s not quite comparable but I am definitely looking forward to spending the weekend with friends, especially since we have already planned a relaxing day in our hotel pool!

Other notable Comtec holidays include a week at home, a weekend trip to a 24-hour Mountain Biking competition, one family holiday to Robin Hood’s Bay as well as certain Comtec-ers purchasing new tents and even a caravan! Of course some Comtec-ers are heading to sunnier climes and bucking the ‘stay-cation’ trend with trips to Turkey, Cyprus and Malaysia either having occurred or being in the pipe line.

London Calling...

London Calling...
Well it’s been a busy couple of months in the sales department. We’re currently selling exhibition space, delegate places and sponsorship packages for one of our biggest events – Infection 2009.

Despite the recession (is anyone else sick of hearing the words “recession” and “in this current climate”???) sales are doing well. The Project Management department have been supporting the sales team too because (as I’m sure everyone is well aware) it’s all hands on deck… in this current climate.

Infection 2009 isn’t the only thing we’ve been focused on. Oh no! We’ve been collecting briefs, writing quotes, winning business and our favourite pastime – pitching!

George Thompson (Sales & Marketing Director), Amanda Gilmour (Account Director) and I (Account Manager) all headed down to London yesterday to pitch for some huge (and very exciting) new business. It was of course completely nerve-wracking but at the same time, totally exhilarating!

However, post-pitch was even more nerve wracking. As we waited at Euston Station for the 18:40 back to Manchester, we felt the crowds growing bigger and more restless by the second. The 18:40 is the first train AFTER peak time you see… and well, it can be a bit scary. The second the platform number was announced, many commuters took off at a run, ramming each other out of the way with bags, briefcases, laptops and trolleys. Two friendly young gents even got into a bit of a fight.

Finally grabbing some seats, we all settled down for the journey back, only to be promptly shifted by two people who had reserved the seats. Argghhh!

It all worked out in the end though – we found a seat in a declassified First Class carriage and made it home in one piece. As I looked out at the Manchester skyline, I was immensely grateful that I didn’t have to do THAT journey every week!

Comtec Bake Off...

Comtec Bake Off
As a former, Bake-Off champion, it is with great pride that I can announce that
August’s Comtec Bake-Off Champion is Laura Wells.

Wellsy stunned judges and her fellow competitors with a fabulous lemon meringue pie.

The calibre of the entries was superb with Rachel Bullock reaching a personal best of second place with her muffins. With my entry of a jam sponge decorated like a "1980’s kid’s birthday cake" (McAteer, 2009) I was happy to claim a joint third position with Events Director, Michele Marsh, who joined the bake-off with her highly acclaimed Carrot Cake.

Trailing in the bottom two positions were the Gilmours. Both Mr and Mrs had a grudge match to see who could claim the title of ‘kitchen supremo’ in their house. Ron, a first time entrant to the bake off, presented judges with a chocolate swiss roll which most believe to be a little ambitious for a first timer. Mrs Gilmour entered with a cookie selection.

Previously Amanda peaked in second place with her fairy cakes, however she is no stranger to the bottom of the scoreboard with her scones, which have won an award for being the "Worst Entry to the Bake Off So Far" and being described as "so dry, you could put one in an Olympic sized swimming pool, and within 30 seconds it would have absorbed every last molecule of water".

Planning for the next Bake Off will begin in the autumn.

Motor Trader Awards - A day in the life of Helen Ford
As usual July comes round and the Comtec crew takes to the road for the Motor Trader Industry Awards. With happy smiley faces the Comtec crew, loaded up Big Bertha (the truck) and the crew jumped into the bus heading down to ‘the big shmoke’. The journey was long to say the least, as the motorways came to yet another stand still. All magazines had been read for the 2nd time - yawn - and after 9 long hours we saw the bright lights of London and the crew bus pulled up outside the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane where we were soon joined by Bertha...

As Fode lowered the tail lift and everyone eagerly awaited the start of the load in, the heavens opened. At first this wasn't too bad, until the sky went from grey to black and the rain changed from a heavy summers rain, to Arctic pebbles of ice!

As the pebbles hit us they felt like needles in our backs. Luckily we had Rowan on hand to brighten the mood as he decided to do a bit of singing in the rain and the crew couldn’t fight back the hysterical laughter.

The load in was the quickest yet, there's a new record to beat crew!

It has been quiet in the office with two of our louder members of staff on their holiday’s this week. It has been positively tranquil!

We’ve had the opportunity to develop the use of video messaging for Business Development recently in Communications House. So far it’s worked a treat and we have had some excellent responses from potential clients. Of course the set-up of the studio and recording I like to leave to the more media savvy folk such as Helen ‘Fordy’ Ford and Ron ‘Spock’ Gilmour.

Infection 2009
Progress with this year’s Infection 2009, the flagship conference of the Federation of Infection Societies, is coming along well amidst the recession.

Almost all of the sponsorship packages and over 50 exhibition stands have been sold with 4 months remaining until the event. The conference is to be held at the Birmingham ICC and has so far attracted exhibitors such as Pfizer, Wyeth and Novartis.

Comtec have set up online delegate booking that has so far proved to be successful in making booking places easy and quick for interested parties and work is currently underway creating a session selector for delegates to chose the sessions they wish to attend prior to the event.

Going for Gold
Comtec’s team of runners smashed any expectations they had with their finish times in the Manchester 10k run in May. With each of the runners finishing under 1hour 30 minutes everyone was happy to have raised over £500 for Manchester New Children’s Hospital.

Four of the eight runners have vowed to take part in next year’s event with Helen Ford, hoping to take part in the Great Swim next year. Furthermore, Amanda Gilmour is running this year’s Great North and Great South runs!

Busy Month
The past few months have been a filled with awards with the crew being up and down the country working on events for clients such as Refresh, Motor Trader and FiFi.

The stars were out at the Fifi awards with Sarah Cox and Mischa Barton both being present for the awards which were hosted by Alex Zane.

Web monkeys pull out all the stops!
Late on Monday, our two web monkeys were given the task of re-creating one of our client’s websites in under a week.

Well Tuesday and Wednesday flew by but, miraculously, the web monkeys pulled out all the stops and completed it in 2 days!!!

We originally made a basic .html website for the client back in November 2008. Since then a lot has changed with us having entirely re-branded the event and the website developing to include abstract submissions as well as online delegate booking and payment.

Are you NUTS about Comtec? N.U.T. are!
This month Comtec provided the National Union of Teachers a full Set, Stage and AV solution.

With controversial motions such as the boycott of SAT's testing for primary school children and taking a stand against the British National Party, the event was heavily featured on every major news network in the UK (Sky, ITN, BBC) throughout the extended Easter Bank Holiday Weekend.

Manchester 10k Run
Six Comtec staff are taking part in this year’s Great Manchester Run. Most of the team have never competed in any road running races before but are keen to take up the challenge and have been training for a number of month’s to complete the 10k run.

Road running veteran’s Amanda and Ron Gilmour have been full of advice for the novice runner’s, none of which the novice’s have chosen to take. The team have chosen to run for the Manchester New Children’s Hospital campaign as the company have vowed to raise £1000 for the charity.

Tai Chi Trish
At our recent Business Link event we were given the task of finding a way of engaging the audience and getting them on their feet. After scratching our head’s for the perfect interactive experience we realised we had the perfect person in our midst.

Trish Clarke, Business Development Manager, who has been with the company for fifteen years, is also a fully trained Tai Chi Instructor. Once asked, Trish was more than willing to help out on the day and get the crowd on their feet practicing the slow motion form of martial arts which is often practiced by groups in parks especially in China.

Recession? What recession? So far, 2009 has been a busy and successful year for Comtec...
Our affiliation with BAE Systems in Barrow continues, this time we were charged with producing the Keel Laying ceremony for the next nuclear submarine "Audacious". The Keel laying ceremony is one of the most celebrated moments in shipbuilding, topped only by the ships launch.

Leaving the competition breathless…
February's challenge was to blow away the audience at the Meeting and Incentive Travel awards. The enormity of this challenge was that the audience was made up of our competitors...

"It’s much harder to impress your competitors than it is the general public as they have the insider knowledge.’ Stated Special Project Director, Ron Gilmour. "So, to have industry experts approach me post-event for an explanation of how we did it is really flattering for the company and just proves that we are really pushing the boundaries with our awards ceremonies!"

In brief we installed a number of projectors, and distorted the picture using image correction facilities that are typically utilised for projecting onto a flat surface at an angle. By distorting the images and blending each projector into the other,
a seamless moving backdrop of stars and planets was created around the curved screen.

Comtec are going N.U.T.'S
Comtec are proud to announce that next month we will be supplying all AV services for the National Union of Teachers (NUT) annual conference, to be held over the Easter weekend in Cardiff.

This prestigious event is a great addition to our calendar and the team involved are really looking forward to producing it. The conference is the one of the most prestigious and sought after conference accounts in the UK and along with the TUC, another Comtec event, will be one of the jewels in our crown.

It's been an amazing start to the year!
The crew started the working year in Liverpool on January 3rd with Lyreco’s annual
Sales Conference at the ACC.

Christmas came early to Comtec with two significant job wins in late December.
Firstly, Comtec are proud to announce that for 2009 we will be the AV suppliers behind the National Union of Teachers (NUT) conference. This prestigious event is a great addition to our calendar and the team involved are really looking forward to producing it. This year’s NUT conference is due to be held over Easter weekend in Cardiff and will be televised, live on the BBC.

Two months ago the company became an approved supplier for Business Link allowing Comtec to quote for their events. We recently received the great news that our proposal for Business Link’s all staff motivational event which will be held in Preston in April had been accepted.

Most companies have started 2009 wondering exactly what the next 12 months will bring?
Well we already know…

This year at the Marketing & Incentive Travel awards Comtec will for the first time in the company’s history, be using curved screen technology.

Ron Gilmour, Special Project Director explained this as fundamentally involving "using 3 projectors to project onto a curved surface and blend the images into each other. We can then utilise correction technology to distort the image to make it appear flat on the screen."

'Lyreco Annual Sales Conference & Exhibition 2009'

At the beginning of 2008, a concept was formulated. A concept that would change Lyreco Sales Conventions forever…

For the 7th consecutive year, Comtec were charged with providing an exciting, informative and engaging 2-day sales conference for over 800 sales professionals for Lyreco. Lyreco in the UK is a fully owned operating subsidiary of the Lyreco Group – a family owned office supplies group, which has operations throughout Europe, Canada, Asia and Australia.

The theme chosen for the 2009 conference was “Back to the Future”. In the current economic climate, the key messages that the delegates needed to take away from the conference were that in order to ensure a successful future they would need to go back to basics, and get the basics right, from the very beginning. With the Managing Director cast as Marty McFly, the Field Sales Director as Doc Brown and the Marketing Director as George McFly – this sales convention was certainly fun and entertaining, but how did we communicate the key messages?

A variety of methods were utilised to engage the audience with the presentations and ensure that the delegates absorbed the ideas. The Comtec team undertook extensive pre-event filming to recreate parts of the film, “Back to the Future”. Although we imitated many of the scenes from the film, we also created our own messages that fit well with the Lyreco brief. The videos were then used to further illustrate points that were made in the presentations.

The iconic DeLorean, which was used for time travel in “Back to the Future”, was a key medium through which to convey Lyreco’s ideas. We used the infamous car in the videos to go back to the 1920’s to see how a stationery company would have operated, then we fast-forwarded to the future for a snapshot of how the Lyreco of 2015 would succeed in its field. The DeLorean not only featured heavily in the videos but was also present, on stage during the convention itself to carry the message through to the delegates.

The team that filmed the videos also edited them and worked closely with the Lyreco team to ensure that all key concepts and ideas were communicated. The same team then spent many hours in Comtec’s own edit suite, putting after-effects onto the film and using 3D modelling to make the films as realistic and believable as possible. With all of Comtec’s services being under one roof, our clients benefit from working with the same team from concept to completion.

We also used a tried-and-tested audience response system to encourage the delegates to connect with the presenters and the messages being conveyed. Delegates were split into regions (South-east region, North-West region etc.) and were then given keypads and asked a series of questions based around the marketing presentation. The results of each question, i.e. a percentage breakdown of each answer, were then shown on screen and the winning region took away a small prize.

The 2009 Lyreco Sales Convention was held at the Liverpool ACC – a fantastic, purpose built venue that provided great facilities and massive scope for what we wanted to achieve. The venue, being one we had not yet worked in, provided us with lots of new and exciting challenges – none of which proved too much for our experienced technical team.

There were also 7 breakout sessions that took place over the 2 days. Again Comtec managed these sessions, which ranged from product workshops to corporate sales presentations.

Lyreco also entrusted Comtec with organising and building a 43-stand supplier exhibition in the ACC’s massive Exhibition Hall, as well as an Oscars themed Gala Dinner for 800 delegates. The exhibition was a massive success. Both delegates and exhibitors alike found the exhibition to be a great learning and networking experience and with a slightly changed format from previous years, Lyreco are confident that we will have another great turnout in 2010.

During the Convention, Comtec produced an Awards Ceremony for the VLP’s – Very Lyreco People. This ceremony celebrated the achievements of some of the most innovative people at Lyreco. There were 39 awards in total and the ceremony was a huge success, with great audience engagement and a lot of very happy winners!

This incredible Sales Convention was brought to a close with a traditional Chinese Lion Dance to launch the next VLP sales incentive scheme. The winners from the 2010 Convention will benefit from a magical trip around the Far East – all courtesy of Lyreco.

Award Winning Month
Not only have Comtec been breaking records this month by selling more delegate and exhibition spaces than ever before, they have been winning awards!

The bespoke exhibition stand created for greetings card manufacturer UK Greetings won 'Best Stand' out of 107 entries at this year's Martin McColl Autumn Retail Exhibition held at Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey.

Comtec Featured On The BBC
This year Comtec Presentations successfully provided a full end-to-end event management solution for the Trades Union Congress. TUC is one of the UK’s most sought after conferences and an event we have produced for 11 consecutive years.

Not only did the event feature all week long on BBC’s Parliament channel and in the
national press, it was also available to view online for up to a week after the event on the BBC’s iPlayer.

The Motor Trader Industry Awards recognise and reward excellence and innovation in and around the Motor Trade. The categories range from Most Improved Business Award to Best Car Advertising Campaign Award.

The evening was hosted by the impressionist Jon Culshaw and the after dinner comedy set was produced by Ian Irving, with the entertainment, casino, racing games and the all important personality girls, this underpinned a fabulous awards ceremony with a variety of multi media techniques.

We as a company are looking forward to many more years working on this event, striving to be innovative and giving them another outstanding production.

UK Greetings Annual Conference & Awards 2008

In the month of June this year Comtec Presentations Produced the UK Greetings Conference & Awards 2008 for the 5th year running.

The event comprised Conference with key presentations by some of the card industries top sales and marketing directors and their work force, and awards ceremony to congratulate some of the top achievers in their field.

The event was a real success and the production was something to be proud of.
There was a lot to pull off including, to name a few, animated idents, bespoke video and live online editing for the whole duration of the event, but Comtec rose to the challenge and the feedback was really positive one of the delegates even said it was the “Best Ever.”

We as a company are looking forward to many more years working with UK Greetings, striving to be innovative and giving them another outstanding event.

Comtec Commended At Event Olympics
Ocean Odyssey' the HRH Naming, Launch and Roll-Out of the Royal Navy's First Astute
submarine received a commendation in the 'Best Event of The Year' category at the
Association of Event Organisers (AEO) annual Excellence Awards staged at Earls Court. The judges commented that they were particularly impressed by the sheer size and scale of this project, which was attended by over 13,000 people for the daytime launch and a further 7,000 for the evening celebration. The event took place within the Devonshire Dock Hall; a nuclear site and the largest indoor submarine build facility in Europe.

Although disappointed not to pick up the main prize Comtec Presentations MD Neil Morris commented "Congratulations to CMPi on their victory in this category for the production of the Music Week Awards. This was our first time at the AEO Excellence Awards and I'm delighted to receive a commendation. I have a fabulous team who are already looking at what they have to do to take home the main prize next year".

Business Link North West
Business Link Northwest has announced the results of its recent tender to procure
marketing services for the organisation for the next three years. Under the framework agreement Comtec Presentations has been appointed as one of a list of approved companies to supply Event Management services to the organisation.

The tender process was undertaken in line with European regulations, with tenders scored on cost and value for money offered, quality of work, the ability to deliver innovative, creative and high quality results alongside criteria relating to policies, procedures and financial status. Business Link Northwest is an impartial business support and information service, available to businesses and individuals in the North West. The service is completely free to use and can be accessed via the telephone, online, or face-to-face for more in depth support. It provides relevant, up-to-date information on business issues such as starting or expanding a business,

One World Media Awards
Thursday 12th June was this year's date for the highly prestigious One World Media Awards. Held for the first time at the New Connaught Rooms in London's Covent Garden, this was Comtec's 11th consecutive year producing this event on behalf of the One World Broadcasting Trust. Hosted by Jon Snow, the awards were recorded by the BBC and will be broadcast on BBC World to a potential audience of 120 million people!

Comtec Presentations Nominated For Major Event Award
Ocean Odyssey - The H.R.H launch of a nuclear submarine and subsequent party for 7,000 people has been short listed in the 'Best Event' category at this years AEO Excellence Awards.

The event which was organised by Comtec Presentations on behalf of BAE Systems was staged within the Devonshire Dock Hall, the largest indoor nuclear submarine facility in Europe. As well as requiring the very highest level security checks on all staff and vehicles working on-site, this venue posed it's own unique challenges. In total the event took a week to build and required over 130 crew and excellent project management skills.

The submarine was launched by the Duchess of Cornwall and the event was covered live by all major UK Press and television networks for features on Sky News, BBC, ITV and Channel 4. The Royal Navy, Rolls Royce and Discovery Channel all required specific footage for their own productions.

The AEO Excellence Awards are organised by the Association of Event Organisers, the trade body that represents companies which conceive, create, develop, manage, market, sponsor, supply or service trade exhibitions and consumer events. The AEO is a completely independent body, which is run by its members for the benefit of it's members - through an elected council of representatives, specialist working groups and full time secretariat.

The AEO Excellence Awards 2008, will take place on the 4th June at Earls Court 2, London.

Comtec Strengthen Their Partnership With UK Ice Hockey
Comtec have consolidated their alliance with UK Ice Hockey this month by securing a deal with the BMI Baby Elite Ice Hockey League - in which the Comtec sponsored Manchester Phoenix play, to produce the inaugural Man of Ice Awards 2008.

The awards have been set up to acknowledge the best players and coaches in the top flight of UK Ice Hockey, and are due to be held on the weekend of the playoff finals in April.

The project will involve the building of a website, including an area in which Hockey fan's can vote for their 'Fan's Favourite' and decide which player they think is 'Hard as Ice'. Furthermore, Comtec have been trusted with designing all the artwork for the event including tickets, menus and email campaigns that will be distributed by all nine clubs in the Elite League.

For 2008, everyone at Comtec has vowed to make the company a better place. Working with North of England Excellence, over the coming months Comtec are hoping to become more efficient and continually self-improve.

Comtec Set To Work With The TUC Again

We have had confirmation that we are to work with the Trades Union Congress again this year. Comtec have held this account for over ten years now and are delighted to have won the job again.

When asked why it is that he has worked with Comtec on this event, Keith Faulkner replied "With our annual congress being a high profile event it is off great importance that we work with a company that can deliver in high pressure situations. After working with Comtec for over ten years they have proven themselves time and time again to be capable of providing a package that is ideal."

Edit Suite Overhaul

We have completely overhauled our edit suite including the installation of new equipment, desks, chairs and a redecoration of the space. The whole of the media department has been renovated with new desks, screens, computers and a lovely turquoise paint! The renovation has been a chance for media to tidy up and create a more inspiring work environment for themselves.

New Website
Our new website is currently in the development stages and the new marketing materials are due to follow shortly after. We already have our new CD-Rom, which has been utilized by our Business Development Executives and we have had some great feedback on it.

Welcome Back Kay!
We are due to welcome back Project Manager Kay Kehoe back into the fold at the start of February after she gave birth to baby Fin last summer. Kay can't wait to get back into the office and has even volunteered to spend of few days in the office before she officially starts back.

Lyreco Annual Conference And Exhibition
Preparations have been well underway for January's Lyreco Conference and Exhibition. the stationers are holding this years event at the Birmingham Metropole. Many of Comtec's staff are having to ensure that their New Year Celebrations are not too wild, as they due to set off on the 1st January to begin setting up.

Early Christmas Present For Comtec
As an early Christmas present, Greater Manchester Police confirmed with Comtec that they would like to work with us on their events in 2008! The first event is due to take place at the Museum of Science and Industry in Castlefield, Manchester.

Feeling Festive
In the run up to Christmas, everyone at Comtec has been feeling festive.
The month started with a bang with a Star Studded company Christmas party.
With most members of staff adorning fancy dress to go with the theme 'Rock & Pop Stars - Dead or Alive'. A number of stars turned up including deceased T-Rex front man Marc Bolan, the girls from ABBA, Alice Cooper, Pink, Shakespeare Sister and Avril Lavigne.

Annual Company Conference
On the last working day before Christmas, Comtec had their annual Company Conference. This event took staff through the changes the company is expecting to make through 2008. Including moving the company into custom made premises and the preparation of new marketing materials.

We Won The Turner Prize!
Comtec have won the contract to produce the prestigious Turner Prize at the Tate Liverpool.

This will be the first year that the event is held outside of London and is part of the build up towards the city being Capital of Culture 2008.

The prestigious art prize has been the cause of controversy for many, with entries such as Tracy Emin's 'unmade bed' in 1999, and was won by Damien Hirst in 1995 - with his animals in formaldehyde. This years event is less controversial and the short listed artists are Zarina Bhimji, Nathan Coley, Mike Nelson and Mark Wallinger. The winner will be announced on December 3rd live on Channel 4, which will mean that this is the third time in six months that Comtec will be featuring on national television.

The Turner Prize, which began in 1984 and was designed as a way in which to provoke national interest in contemporary art, has a prize fund of £40,000 with £25,000 going to the winner and the £5,000 to other nominees.

Comtec Work With Sven Goran Eriksson:
2007 has been another amazing year for Comtec Presentations. Highlights include producing the TUC Conference for over ten consecutive years and launching the Astute Class Submarine for BAE Systems.

With our offices only a couple of miles from the City of Manchester Stadium and over half of our team being 'true blues' the highlight of this month wasn't some big budget extravaganza, but a straightforward evening with Sven Goran Eriksson and a number of Manchester City players.

The last time Manchester City were flying this high in Football's top flight they were playing at Maine Road and we were still using 3.5mm projectors and making slides by hand. They're now in the state of the art City of Manchester Stadium and we're working high definition - but in both cases neither's passion has dimmed.

Awards Season Is Here:
From Property to Food & Wine to Retail to Electrical - the awards season is now in full swing! We are currently up and down the country like a yo-yo, and on October 4th we saw the Comtec crew split between Manchester and London. Up North we were celebrating the very best in Property at the Manchester Evening News property Awards, while the rest of the team were undertaking Purple Media's Electrical Awards.

BAE Systems Astute Submarine Naming & Roll Out June 2007

The challenge was set. To produce the launch of the first Astute Class Submarine at BAE Systems Submarine Solutions in Barrow-in Furness. With a 12 month lead time the team were on a mission.

With the submarine measuring 100m long x 16m wide, the launch had to take place in Devonshire Dock Hall, the largest indoor submarine build facility in Europe. This nuclear facility requires the highest-level security checks on all staff and vehicles working onsite.

The event build took one week and involved 135 crew, 15 articulated lorries, 10 x 7.5 tonne trucks and 2 coaches to transport personnel.

From laying temporary flooring covering over 10,000m2, to installing a 100m2 LED Video Screen to enable viewing for over 11,000 people, to the construction of a carpeted 50m x 10m semi-permanent catering structure (complete with chandeliers) for 450 VIP’s, the launch required event and delegate management of the very highest level.

And this was just the daytime event. The evening celebration was a party for 7000 people, again within the nuclear facility. 3 live bands, including a 12 piece Soul Band performed on a 40m2 concert stage. To control the sound in the Devonshire Dock Hall, baffling drapes were hung from cranes over 100ft high and a further 2 x 25m2 LED Video Screens were rigged to the truss structure of the Concert Stage to aid audience visibility. A full buffet meal and bar facilities were provided for all 7,000 attendees. The evening concluded with a 20 minute firework display set to music.

The boat was launched by the Duchess of Cornwall and the event was covered live by all major UK Press and Television networks for features on Sky News, BBC and ITV.

7,000 launch DVD’s were produced containing all footage from the event and the Royal Navy, Rolls Royce and the Discovery Channel required specific footage for their own productions.

This event was commended in the “Best Event of the Year” category at the AEO (Association of Event Organisers) Awards Ceremony in June 2008.
